It’s been a hot minute since I’ve updated y’all on what’s been happening around the Birchfield house! I know I’ve been a little MIA over the holiday season, but it was so nice to focus on settling into our new home here in Massachusetts and to spend much needed time with family and friends!
As you might remember, Craig and I were in a studio apartment while we were living in D.C. That means that when we upgraded to our spacious two-bedroom apartment, we had a lot of furnishing to do!
We’ve been taking baby steps, tackling one room at a time. Our first project has been the kitchen and dining room. While the apartment is pretty large, the kitchen and dining areas are definitely on the smaller side. I’ve been trying to get creative with how we can furnish and decorate to make the most of these spaces.
Slowly, but surely, the dining room is coming together. While I’ll be posting more progress in the coming few weeks, I wanted to share my plan for the space with you!

I wanted to embrace the modern farmhouse look, while still incorporating neutral and handmade elements into the mix. I love the contrast between the black and white that’s happening, with wood elements like natural beads and a big ol’ dough bough filled with greenery serving as gorgeous accents!
I’m obsessed with the metal chairs — I ordered mine in the “antique black” color and just adore them. Distressed with a bronze color over the black keeps the modern look grounded with a slightly rustic touch. Since our space is so tight, I was on the hunt for a smaller table that still brought a bit of charm to the space — and this cute dining table was the winner!
I initially bought this ivory and grey rug for our living room while we were living in D.C. but I think it’ll make a beautiful statement piece sitting under the table in our dining room!
I love this simple console table, though I plan on changing out the drawer pull to a matte black pull to tie back into the black metal chairs. My momma bought us a Nespresso coffee machine for Christmas, so this table will serve as our little coffee bar, complete with my rather large collection of Rae Dunn mugs 😉
My favorite piece that I have my eyes on is this gorgeous scroll art from Cottonwood Shanty (which is also the featured photo for this post!) Have you ever seen something so dreamy?!
I can’t wait to show y’all more as our dining room continues to come together over the next few weeks!
Which is your favorite piece? Are you into the modern farmhouse look?
