The Easiest Way to Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home

How do you brew hot coffee? Well, to get down to the basics, you combine hot water and coffee grinds, and voila – a cup of hot coffee.

So why do people insist that iced coffee comes from adding a few iced cubes to steaming hot coffee? Instead of making it, well, iced, the melted ice dilutes the coffee and brings it down to about room temperature, as best.

When it comes to making a fantastic cup of iced coffee, cold-brew is the way to go. I guarantee it will be the sweetest, smoothest cup of iced coffee you’ve ever had. And while I normally will take a little cream with my coffee, I always end up drinking cold-brew iced coffee just straight up black.

What You’ll Need

  • French press
  • 1/3 cup of medium – dark roast coffee (ground for french press)
  • 1 1/2 cups of cold, filtered water
  • Ice
  • Milk/Cream (optional)
  • Sweeteners – flavored syrups, sugar, etc. (optional)

How To Make It

  1. Grind your coffee beans. // The beans should be ground coarsely for french press. If you do not have a grinder at home, you are free to stop by any Starbucks store to have your coffee ground, as long as you are using Starbucks brand coffee.
  2. Combine both water and coffee in your french press. // Place the ground coffee into your french press first, and then pour the water on top of the grounds.
  3. Give it a stir. // Stir the coffee and water together to ensure the mixture is well blended. The grounds will naturally float to the top.
  4. Place lid onto the french press. // Ensure that you do not plunge; the plunger should be in its up-right position.
  5. Put your french press into the refrigerator. // Your coffee should be refrigerated between 12-24 hours.
  6. Plunge the press to separate the grounds. // It will be a little difficult to plunge, so don’t be afraid to use some force!
  7. Serve it up, and enjoy! // Pour over ice and add milk, cream, sugar to your taste, or just enjoy a cup of it black!

Recipe Notes

  • Depending on how long you leave your coffee to cold-brew, it may be too strong for your taste. When serving, I advise you use 1 part cold, filtered water and one part iced coffee, or simply add a good amount of cream.
  • If you wish to make a larger batch, simply use this same ratio of coffee to filtered water.
